The Why?
Growing up in far West Cornwall there wasnt all that much to do, this was long before the likes of social media, especially Facebook, X / Twitter etc, For sure I used to go out and about on my push bike, radio-wise I began with buying a pair of licence free PMR446 radios from Dixons, I used to be able to speak to my parents from Long - Rock / Marazion back to home in Gwavas Street Penzance. In the summer months I would often speak to others down along the coast, communications was and still is a huge interest.
The Who?
Who could I speak to on half a watt on licence free, not all that many to be honest, later on I dabbled with CB Radio (Citizen Band) I had a 1/2 wave vertical up on the apex at no 8 Gwavas Street and also a vertical dipole - the dipole was made in Sweden and it really did pull in signals from all across the UK and upto Scotland etc, I think this is when I realised there was something rather fascinating about speaking long distance using the radio-waves.
The Where and When?
So moving on from PMR446 and Citizen Band Radio (CB) I looked into what was required to become a radio amateur (Ham), thankfully for me, I passed the RSGB exam on the very first try and ever since 2007 I have held the same amateur radio callsign of M3UHQ, with the addition of new rules in 2025 - E, ME3UHQ and instead of 10w were now given 25w. Now everywhere I go I take a handheld with me, soon when I have worked out the best way forward am going to be going out operating portable on the HF Bands too. Videos from my radio outings will be available here at M3UHQ.com and also on my YouTube channel. (Link)
